USARS Semi-final In a game that is hard to describe with up's and downs that eventually went beyond extra time and into sudden death Wake Forest defeated Georgia Tech 13 - 8 to end GT's chances of advancing in the USARS tournament. GT easily dominated Wake Forest in the scrum, played great defense and shut down their star fly half in the first 40 minutes of the game. Brandon Strellis had a great first half shutting down the centers with some great tackling and an exciting intercepted pass which he almost ran the full length of the field before running out of gas. GT had several opportunities to score. GT missed 2 penalty kicks that would have secured a nice lead. GT played a conservative forward game eventually getting an overload in the corner allowing winger Alex Whigham to score in the 38:00 minute. GT 5 WFU 0 The second half started off well until a penalty set WFU up for three points bringing the game within 2 points. Ten minutes later #4 Patrick Strarnes stretched the GT lead by another 3 with a well kicked penalty. The game now went back and forth with WFU at times dominating and GT at times dominating. With 20 minutes left in the game. Georgia Tech took a major blow as eight man and leading GT try scorer Adam Thomson had to leave the game with a shoulder injury. Minutes later Brandon Strellis and GRU MVP fly half Nathan Bruce could not play any longer. Bruce due to being sick the entire week and Brandon with muscle cramps. Just prior to the end of the game WFU found the overload on the backs and put one in the corner to tie the game and take us to overtime. FInal GT 8 WFU 8 We now were to play two 10 minute half's. The game went back and forth. In the final minutes both GT and WFU had the opportunity to win the game. Neither team could get a try and WFU attempted a drop kick that went wide to the right. GT then found themselves with one minute left in the game inches from scoring in possession of the ball and trying to drive the ball over the line. They soon received a penalty took the option for a scrum and drove hard on the WFU pack. Unfortunately excitement lead GT to drive too fast loosing the opportunity to simply slowly drive the ball over the line. The positive side is we maintained possession then kept driving. Once again lack of patience created a pass to full back Ben (Photon) who was isolated and unsupported. The overtime ended with a kick out by WFU. Sudden Death Overtime The overtime again went back and forth until 3 minutes into it WFU kicked and up and under. GT knocked the ball on allowed WFU to play the advantage, caught the GT forwards out wide and drove hard with their forwards to win the game and advance to the finals vs East Carolina State. In all some GT players played over 103 minutes of rugby. Both teams were out of substitute players. It was an exhausting but thrilling game with both teams having so many opportunities to end the game. Players from both sides were physically exhausted after the game that even when WFU won several of their players just collapsed on the field unable to join the celebration. |
